Prayer for Transfiguration Sunday 2020

A Prayer for Transfiguration Sunday

Written By Aaron Schultz

On this Transfiguration Sunday,

            We look to the mystery of Jesus the Christ;

            The declaration of Divinity

            Revealed with the ghostly apparitions of the beloved Saints.

This extravagant Revelation we honor seems completely dissimilar

            To the quiet and infrequent whispers we hear from You.

Christ is revealed in extravagance, isolation, and exclusivity on the mountain peak,

            Instead of a visitation shrouded in the ordinary peacefulness or Your presence

                        Encoded in mundane moments of our life on the ground.

Help us to live into the tension of our intimate interconnectedness of Divinity within us

            And the infinite chasm between what separates our humanity

                        from Your perfect Holiness.

At times we feel stranded at the foot of the mountain,

            But we all receive invitation at the mountain peak;

                        A glimpse of heavenly solace;

                        An invitation to find rest;

                        An opportunity to keep vigil with the saints of Glory and the

                                    Undivided relationality of the Trinity.

Help us to step in faith, into the Divine Dance,

            To discover our truest self by living into the Love

                        We have for ourselves, one another, and in You.

It is in the Holy name of Jesus the Christ we pray, Amen.

Notes:

This prayer is an inquiry into one of the mysteries at the heart of the Transfiguration; what is Jesus’ relationship to the Father, what is his relationship to the prophets Moses and Elijah, and what does this mean about our relationship with Jesus the Christ.

In relationship to my evangelical roots, I always felt like I had an “all-access pass” to God growing up. There was no mystery and there was no reverence to solidify the difference between Jesus the best friend and Jesus as eternal Logos. As I am developing as a human being, I have come to appreciate this tension of being intimately connected to God while recognizing the vast unknowability that is God. There is complete uninhibited welcome and there is reverential awe happening simultaneously.
